ヒロイン失格 (Heroine Shikkaku) - Chapter 14
Adachi's narration: "I think to have both friends and the person i love in school is very far away from me now."
A girl (resembles Hatori but it's not Hatori) unknowingly knocks Adachi's book on the floor.
Adachi looks at their back and thought to herself "These kind of people looks scary... i guess they might think that i'm an idiot. Ikeda-san (the girl's name) seems to click easily with others if there's a common topic however, i'm not sure of what's happening in the entertainment scene."
Rita: "Looks like you are reading a difficult book."
Adachi: "It's about how children are bring brought up in European countries."
Adachi's thoughts "I wonder why he's talking to be bit by bit but to me, it's something i'm very happy about. In the class, there is this atmosphere that i'm very pitiful and i dislike it very much. I wonder why but Terasaka-kun really just treats me normally and that means me feel secured."
Adachi sees Rita laying under a tree and wonder if he's asleep.
Rita: "Why?"
Adachi: "I'm thinking you might catch a cold or something... " holding a jacket in her hand and continues: "I was planning to cover you with this and walk away. I'm sorry."
Rita: "There's nothing to apologized about. Are you still reading that difficult book?"
Adachi: "Ah?"
Rita: "You enjoy reading those books?"
Adachi: "To say that it's interesting... i should say i'm reading it more for my future."
Rita: "By reading those books, what can it do to your future?"
Adachi: "My dream is to become a journalist. In the future i wish to be able to come in contact with many people and to be knowledgeable about many things. To be able to convey my thoughts through my writings."
Rita: "You are not anywhere near that isn't it?"
Adachi, shocked: "EH? Why do you say that?"
Rita: "That is because you dislike others isn't it?"
Adachi: "I don't dislike them."
Rita: "But you are always alone."
Adachi: "That is because there isn't anyone in class whom i can click with."
Rita: "Then... how can you click with someone?"
Adachi thinks to herself "I've not thought about this before." and she said: "To say who i can click with and who i can't... others have already think that they can't click with me. I'm... dull and i don't say interesting things. Since junior high i guess... people thinks that to be my friend... they will be labeled as unfashionable as well.....
Adachi's thoughts "It does not mean that i do more then what i can and i will be able to make friends."
Rita: "Adachi-san, you are putting yourself to low. There are people who aren't fashinable and yet they are able to make friends. The same for being interesting. That is because to Adachi-san, you see such unfashionable people as BAKA and that is why you've already decided that you are unable to make any friends. To be honest, i have difficulty hanging out with others and i think it's troublesome...
Adachi's thought "Terasaka-kun's words hit me and at the sametime, i am able to think of beautiful things. Even if i want to change, there are still many things which i can't change."
Adachi walking along the corridor and thinks to herself "But there are a lot of people whom treats others as BAKA just because they are unfashionable." and she sees Rita in front of her. Rita should be with Hatori. Adachi thinks to herself again "Even though Terasaka-kun said those words but he will also feel troubled if a girl like me confessed to him. I'm sorry to think of such weird things."
Rita sees Adachi from the corner of his eyes and shouted out for her.
Adachi's thought "However... Terasaka-kun... if it's Terasaka-kun..."
Adachi: "I like you. Can you go out with me?" and she thinks to herself "I've said it."
Rita: "Orr,"
Adachi thinks to herself: "He said 'Orr' that means no... I really did cause him trouble. See... i knew it. It's not such a beautiful think after all."
Rita: "Sure...
Adachi: "Eh? Why? This isn't real is it?"
Rita: "What do you mean?"
Adachi: "Is it alright? I'm unfashionable. Woudn't you feel embarrassed walking beside me?"
Rita: "Eh... aren't you confessing to me?"
Adachi: "It is... but..."
Rita: "I'm happy that you said you like me. Is it alright with you too? I'm a boring person."
Adachi: "It's so easy?"
Adachi's thoughts "It's then, when my world starts to change. With Terasaka-kun around, i thought anything is possible." Adachi crying in her bed while recalling these events of how she and Rita became an item.
Nakajima: "What joke is it this time round? Did you sell the fishing thing which Rita gave you during your elementary school days to buy this ring and pretend that it's from Rita?"
Hatori: "No! No! It's a matter of time that i get Rita. The ring on my left hand belongs to Rita... it might be a little early to put it on now..."
Nakajima: "Wait Hatori... It's Adachi. She can hear you!"
Hatori: "Oh no!"
Nakajima: "She's been along since that happened between her and Rita."
Hatori's thoughts "... why does she look pitiful... but things will never change!"
Adachi: "Nakajima-san, can i speak with you for a minute?"
Adachi: "I'm sorry but can you replace me as the person incharge for the cultural festival?"
Nakajima: "Sure..." thinking that it's with Hatori.
Adachi: "I'm sorry."
Nakajima: "No worries about it."
Adachi turns a walks away but Nakajim calls out to her: "Adachi-san... this might sound strange but i can lend you a listening ear if you need."
Adachi stops and her eyes filled with tears.
Nakajima thinks to herself "Have i said something unnecessary? However, even i'm feeling the pain in my heart but this person..." turns to Hatori who's reading guide book on where to go on dates for couples.
Hatori: "What do you think you are doing? You stupid Nakajima."
Nakajima: "Can't you behave yourself a little? You are immersing yourself in the name of love too early. You've snatched someone else boyfriend away. If you want to immerse yourself in love do it when Adachi isn't around."
Hatori: "Are you saying that you are siding the other side? Nakajima.... you are siding Adachi?"
Nakajima: "No! It's not that! I've been thinking a lot and i know. I've been seeing the both of you all the while so i know that you've been hurt a lot a lot but you've put in a lot of effort as well. Isn't it a good thing to consider Adachi-san's feeling? Hatori... there might not be anyone who is stronger than you."
Rita: "Adachi!" and he ran towards her and said: "I'll bring her to the infirmary."
At the infirmary, Adachi on the bed with Rita and Hatori standing beside her.
Hatori left, unwillingly and wonders what Rita and Adachi are going to talk about.
Adachi: "It's the first time i've fainted. I've much have shocked you. I'm sorry."
Rita: "I'm the one at fault. I'm really sorry."
Adachi: "I was thinking about how i met Rita and how we became an item last night. It's so great. Terasaka-kun really did go out with me. It my first time... being accepted by someone else other then my family. I was happy and i became more confident....
Hatori: "Rita! How is Adachi-san?"
Rita: "Um."
Hatori: "What is 'Um'?"
Rita: "Hatori... i think it's still better for me to be by Adachi's side."
Rita: "I will be by her side when she is well."
Hatori: "What is this? Why do you say something like this suddenly?"
Rita: "She can't do it without me by her side. She really needs me."
Hatori: "I too need you!"
Rita: "But you have Nakajima and others by you side right? For her, she only has me."
Hatori let go of Rita and he walks away.
Hatori: "It's not that....
Rita is shocked hearing Hatori's words.
Hatori's thoughts "Dear God, why are you siding Adachi only? What have i done wrong? Do you think i'm a drumstick?"

Blood boiling chapter isn't it!!!! I think Rita is the worst and most hated Hero i know. Why is he treating Hatori like trash? Why does guys always stay by the weaker girls side? Why are all the girls who appeared to be stronger always at the losing end? I feel like strangling Rita now!

I disagree, I don't think Rita's that horrible. Look at all the other shoujo mangas, the main lead will always be noble and stay by the weaker girl's side, so why would Rita be any different by what he's doing? Adachi really DOES need him, since he's the first person to have "accepted" her, after all..
At this point, I wish Rita would stay with Adachi and they could just live happily ever after together forever and ever or whatever, and Hatori moves on to somebody who would actually love her wholesomely and not be so damned wishy-washy like Rita is. I really feel for poor Hatori, she should just date Kousuke and try to love him as much as she loved Rita.
Thanks for the translation! I just wish the author would put Hatori with Kousuke already.. It really hurts to see her all heartbroken by a guy that will never love her back.
Rita is definitely hopeless...It seems like he choose to stay by Adachi's side not because he loves her more than Hatori and he wants to stay with her but only because he feels sorry for her and since she needs him, he'll stay by her side.
The problem is that it looks like Rita don't know what love is...Seems like he's lost and don't know what to do but his girlfriend, who he's hurted shows her pitiful side and then he decided to stay with her...
Since the beginning he's really mean to Hatori and he hurted her countless time, when will she realise that he's no good for her?!!
I feel sorry for Adachi but I can't stand Rita's behavior!!!
Well I hope Hatori will finally understand that she doesn't need a coward like Rita and give up on him. It's better for her to find happiness with Kousuke or another guy.
I don't even hope for Hatori to end with Rita anymore, he doesn't deserve her. Rita choose Adachi so I hope he will stay with her until the end.
I'd really love to see him realise his feelings for Hatori and then suffer and regrets when Hatori will be happy with another guy.
I'm still wondering, what's so good about Rita?!! All we can see aren't really his good sides...

Yep, there it is - I've finally identified what it is about Hatori that triggers me. Anybody ever been friends with an addict? Am I right? There is a very specific brand of self-absorption that comes with the territory, and H was in FINE form this chapter, wasn't she? Who can blame Nakajima (who was awesome, by the way) for smacking her? Good Lord.
Speaking of, when DID he start to factor into things for Hatori, anyway? Did I really just see her blame GOD for siding with Adachi in the scheme of things instead of the person who MADE the choice? GOD forbid she should hold Rita accountable for even his own actions or choices, or see him in any way that might change her perception of him. No, no, let's not blame him for any of this misery, or pain, or humiliation - of course not. That it wouldn't even occur to her really reinforces how determined she is to love him - I really think, more and more, that this has to end up with her learning not to love him as her means of growth. Like quitting a bad habit. Getting on the wagon, you know. Sheesh, it's frustrating to watch how monstrous addicts become in the pursuit of their drug.
Rita continues to be gross, but you know he's really just taking the path of least resistance. It's not a guilt thing that's keeping him with Adachi at all, but an extension of his own insecurity. Of course now that a girl NEEDS him, suddenly she's a lot more appealing (*gag*). He knows Hatori could do better than him, and he knows that if he gives her what she wants, she might realize that too. This whole thing is his sick way of keeping her in his life - he has all the power, no way is he giving it up.
Every time Kousuke pops up juxtaposed Rita, I'm reminded of a Goofus and Gallant strip. That is all.
Male leads sure do stay at the "princess's" side..so about that part there is nothing to hate about Rita..but what gets on my head is that he doesn't even treat Hatori as a good friend..*Rita, I know you care about adachi but to treat a good friend like that is uhmm..*
He is always showing mean tone towards her..and rita, if I remembered correctly, got angry at the guy hatori dated shortly..even saying that he is the one she likes..
You see, if she is a really dear friend to him, he will clear these things up and simply you know treat her as THE FRIEND THAT PATTED HIS HEAD WHEN HE WAS AT HIS TERRIBLE MOMENTS(in short, most important friend)..cause if someday they got married and he gets all confused again..he will surely treat her like how he treats her now
And Adachi isn't your typical shoujo "princess"..I've never recalled a main shoujo character headbutting her enemies..most of the time main shoujo characters headbutts their partner.For me, she is too showy..OR MAYBE IT'S JUST BEACUSE I HATE HER

I meant to say "thank you" for the summary in my previous post, but this chapter put me in such a blinding rage, I forgot. Sorry about that! I really do appreciate the summaries for this series. It is certainly a thought-provoking manga.
I have regained a measure of calm now, so I'll just concur with what SoFree was saying. I also think that this series is about Hatori growing up and seeing that what she feels for Rita is not real love. Not that her feelings are false, it's just that they are unhealthy. We are getting more and more hints now that her relationship with Rita is a "co-dependency" that is quite destructive. Like anangryperson said, Rita has never been a true friend to her. I remember now, I think it was in chapter 6, that Hatori thinks back to how Rita always led and she just followed along; that is a good description of how he treats her, like his loyal minion. She really needs to just remove him from her life.
It seems more and more like Rita will end up with Adachi, but the problem I have with this is that Rita doesn't deserve to have anyone as his girlfriend. He has already shown that if you leave him alone for any length of time, he will cheat. He is a weak, untrustworthy person of poor character. Adachi, though I find her annoying, is still too good for him. Also, I was surprised at the change in her characterization this chapter; she had always seemed like a strong, independent person with her own goals, and now she says she is "nothing" without Rita?! I was disappointed in her.
This may be the first manga I've read where the arc of the heroine seems to be discovering she does NOT love the male lead. I'm hoping against hope that this chapter was the turning point, and Hatori starts her journey towards emotional freedom from now on.

He's so pitiful. I feel sorry for Adachi although still don't like her. As for Hatori, I hope she'll cut all ties with Rita, stop being friends with him and all, because he always treats her garbage can. And Kousuke fighting!!!

hahaha seeing the funny hateful comments here make my day. A big thank you for the summary you've been doing for us unfortunate folks who have no access to this manga. Thank you really! I'm so addicted to this manga now and I regret the day I checked this out. This manga really stands out for me and Hatori's hair-pulling blindness for love is one of the reason why. lol
As for me, I think RitaxHatori is still not over yet. Yes, Rita is a scum. Yes, Hatori's naivety is off the charts. Despite all that, the fact that a confused Rita chose Adachi out of necessity, and THIS early in the manga mind you, still tells me that HatorixRita is still in the running. NOT that I see Rita as this big prize or anything here. Rita doesn't seem to know what he should do. He takes advantage of Hatori because he knows she will always be by his side. And also he gets easily swept along with the flow especially when he saw Adachi's pitiful speech. This guy is a really weak douche bag but the sad thing is...guys like this exist in reality more than those typical righteous shoujo male leads which is rare to non-existent imo.
What Hatori should do is to keep her distance from Rita. Get a reality check and look at herself again one more time. If Rita really does treasure her, in fairness I think he does, he will MISS her himself and go to her. But alas. I don't think this is going to happen anytime soon as Hatori is really a simple-minded creature so I expect more facepalm and head-desk along the way. Honestly, I will be satisfied even if Rita and Hatori do not end up together. Afterall as long as Hatori has a hotter more deserving bishounen by her side to take Rita's place, all is good. Ne? ^_~ lolz
hatori should just give up on him and stop wasting her time on a huge ass who just lame. She a strong person and she needs someone who is strong for her and will stay on her side. I feel sorry for Adachi, i dont hate her though...i think she just needs to kind of become more stronger and say f u Rita your a dick and just find a non-ass. (=

The author did say its based off of a true story so give it time. Adachi frustrates me because she doesnt seem to fight harder for Rita. At one point she Even supported Hitori, although shes a good person she doesnt grasp the fact that shes going to be walked all over. I'm disappointed in Hatori because she's not giving herself a chance to be happy, and Rita isn't exactly a saint. Whether he meant to intentionally or not, he did mess with two girl's feelings, which isn't right. As for kousuke, why is it that in mangas like this one, or ao haru ride, or strobe edge, you really start to fall more for the guy trying to patch the broken hearted girl back up? I'm starting to really like kousuke. In strobe edge and ao haru rido I loved all the guys but in this one, Rita isn't really doing it for me. Kousuke is more reassuring. Welp, I just started reading this manga today but I like it. Thanks for the scantalations :)
